DOCSIS is an international specification for cable modems created by CableLabs. Because DOCSIS has become a standard, it is recognized by companies involved in the manufacture of network components for the cable market. It is very important because it allows collaboration between cable modems and CMTS. Thanks to this specification, cable operator customers get access to the Internet via the HFC network. The specification uses one or more forward and one or more return channels. The data that is sent to the user is sent to all cable modems. Each modem then only receives the data that is intended for it. The cable modems themselves can not communicate with each other. Theoretically, it is possible to use the DOCSIS specification for digital television as well. However, the data that travels from the modem is compressed into the MPEG-2 data format. Cable modems are also mounted in set-top boxes that have their "OpenCable" specification.
